My bento friends are having a blog hop in honor of the new movie Oz The Great And Powerful which comes out tomorrow.

I made a fish bento. Not really on top of things over here.

Actually, I did put a respectable effort into trying to come up with something “Oz” but my crazy brain just kept coming back to fish.

So fish it is.

In today’s bento, Cam has a Nutella sandwich on swirled white/wheat bread. I used picks to spell out her favorite fish’s name. She loved that. I also put some goldfish crackers in the cute fish box. I used small cutters to make some fish, a whale, and a starfish out of cheese. And I put grapes and mandarin wedges in a “leafy” silicone cup. I think it looks slightly like kelp or seaweed so we’ll go with that. 😉

It’s a froggy Bento!

And the last in my impromptu animal themed bento series.

In today’s lunch Cam has a pb&j froggy sandwich, cheese hearts stamped with froggy faces, organic fruit leather tongue and “ribbit”, strawberries, and tiara shaped pretzels which were left over from our big Valentine’s box of snack bags.

All of this froggy fun is packed into one of our Easy Lunchboxes.

Have a great weekend!

Cam’s school had a math based scavenger hunt at a local grocery store last night. She adores math and actually does math workbooks for fun so we thought this would be right up her alley. We were right!

Each kid was given a list of tasks based on their grade level and when their sheet was filled out completely, they turned it in to the Assistant Principal in exchange for a goodie bag and some popcorn.

She had such a good time last night so I thought I would make her a fun lunch today to remind her of her super fun scavenger hunt.

In this lunch:

  • Grape tomatoes
  • Carrots
  • Strawberries
  • Clementine – from goodie bag
  • Scooby Snacks – from goodie bag
  • Cheese shapes
  • Pumpkin seeds – in the star box
  • Organic fruit leather

There were also some meal time conversation cards in her little bag of treats so I thought it would be fun to include one today.

I’m not sure why I waited so long to buy a set of Easy Lunchboxes.

I mean, I’m not a lady who makes rash purchases. I do a ridiculous amount of research before I buy anything, but all the reviews I read for Easy Lunchboxes had been overwhelmingly positive. And the great majority of my bloggy friends love them and use them often.

Not that I’m a gal who gives in to peer pressure but if that many people think these containers are so fantastic, how could they be anything but? Right.

Maybe it was the non-conformist in me. I’m glad she got over herself.

When my big box of bento goodies came the other day and I unpacked my new set of Easy Lunchboxes “Brights” – I have to say that I was happily surprised at how sturdy they felt. The lids are brightly colored and just so happen to be Cam’s favorite colors too. Naturally she assumes that I planned it that way. I’m not telling her any different. She’s happy, I’m a genius – Winning.

Pictured below is Cam’s first ELB lunch just before it made its maiden voyage to school this morning.

In today’s lunch:

  • Israeli couscous with sweet peppers, feta, sun-dried tomato, lemon zest, & parsley
  • A mandarin
  • 2 star-shaped cookies from The Fresh Market
  • Strawberries
  • Salad – green leaf lettuce, carrots, grape tomatoes, star-shaped rice crackers
  • Pumpkin and sunflower seeds in the rainbow box

I normally don’t post lunch pics on the weekends but I thought today’s lunch was pretty cute and worth a quick post.

Camryn and her Dad had a park day today so I made her a quick lunch to bring with her.

Since the park sits right on the bay, they always take time to walk down the pier and watch the fish and the boats go by. Since I had fish and a boat cutter, I couldn’t resist.

I packed two dolphin sandwiches, cheese fish, waves, and a boat, Goldfish, and grapes.

I made corn muffins with sun-dried tomatoes, garlic and corn for a dinner with friends last night. They were delish and I had so many leftover. So I packed a couple for lunch today topped with cute mozzarella elephants. I also added salami rolls-ups, tortilla chips, strawberries and celery.

Did you know that a baby fish is called a fry?

I sure didn’t. Not until this weekend when I had an aquarium full of them.

Let me back up a sec so this makes sense.

Camryn got an aquarium for Christmas. The weekend after Christmas, her Daddy took her to the pet store where she picked out two fish. Those fish have been happy and thriving in their new home on our counter top.

Over the last few days we noticed that one of the fish was getting really… plump. And she was eating like crazy.

My Husband made a joke about her possibly being pregnant (at that point we didn’t even know it was a her – we just always referred to that fish as a girl).

Long story short, we go to my parents’ house for lunch and there are two fish in the tank.

We come home later that evening and there are nine.

Seven teeny tiny little fish.

We’re calling them the fry kids – remember them?

A fishy themed lunch seemed appropriate today.

Here it is.

I made two fish shaped sandwiches which represent her two full-grown fish. She also has mozzarella bubbles, and a cup full of fry kids (cupcake flavored Goldfish crackers). The grapes and tomatoes kind of look like the gravel in her aquarium and strawberries are her favorite so I put them in as well. I included a “great job” pick because she’s done such a good job of taking care of her new pets.

All nine of them.

Cam and her Daddy are having a park day today so I packed her a fun little lunch that she could munch on when she got hungry.

We have a great park just down the road from us located right on the bay that has multiple playgrounds. Kids can run from playground to playground all afternoon and when they get tired of that, they can walk out on the dock and look at the boats going by or try to spy sea life under the water. Fun!

My two usually stay out a while when they go to this park so this will cover lunch and snack.

This lunch contains broccoli, strawberries, grapes, carrots, 4 hazelnut spread sandwiches (2 of each animal, stacked), and a small container which contains raisins and tiny chocolate candies.

Once I got everything packed, I realized that I hadn’t put any protein in her lunch so I threw in a cheese stick for good measure.

He’s Coming!

Today is Camryn’s last day of school before she is off for the holidays for the next two weeks. Her class is going to be watching Polar Express today while they sip hot chocolate with marshmallows and munch on popcorn. She also got to wear her pajamas and slippers to school. Best day ever? I’d say so.

For lunch I packed her two gingerbread man sandwiches (one filled with chocolate hazelnut spread and the other with chicken), clementines, strawberry Santa hats, candy cane Hershey Kisses, and egg nog cookies.

The Santa hats are super easy to make. I just cut the leaves from each strawberry & blotted dry with a paper towel so that the chocolate would stick. I dipped them in melted white chocolate and sprinkled white sparkly sprinkles over the top of the chocolate before it set. Then I cut a marshmallow in half and stuck it on top. If you didn’t want to mess with melted chocolate you could use banana slices or you could use the bigger marshmallows, sliced horizontally & just stick them to the bottom.

Egg nog cookies are just sugar cookies with a little cinnamon and nutmeg added to the dough before baking. When the cookies are cooled, I add egg nog to powdered sugar a teaspoon at a time and mix well until it becomes thin enough to drizzle over the cookies. I drizzle over with a fork and then add some sprinkles.  That’s it.
