Daily Bento

26 Feb

As I was looking around for lunch ideas last night, I happily discovered that I had lots of kitty bento stuff – most of which I hadn’t used yet. So I made a kitty cat bento for my kitty cat loving kid.

We had an impromptu sandwich spread taste test after school yesterday. Cam said she was ready to try peanut butter again so once the shock wore off, I grabbed every jar of anything that would spread on a cracker I could find. I figured I might as well milk this opportunity for all it was worth.

She tried Biscoff spread, PB  & Co. White Chocolate Wonderful, PB & Co. Dark Chocolate Dreams, and regular old peanut butter.

Oddly enough, she had already tried a couple of these items before and swore to me that she hated them.

Well guess what? This time she liked them all.

Kids are fickle.

Biscoff won the taste test by a landslide. Followed by the white chocolate peanut butter, the dark chocolate peanut butter, and lastly – regular peanut butter.

Since she was so fond of the Biscoff, I put some in her lunch today in the middle of a kitty sandwich with a teeny bit of jelly. She also has cat-shaped cheese (oh my word), carrot coins, and Annie’s Cheddar Bunny Snack Mix in the cat cup.

Happy Friday!

The couscous is making another appearance. What can I say? The kid likes her couscous.

We had some grilled chicken leftover from dinner last night so I added a few pieces along with a bit of green leaf lettuce which Cam likes to munch on every now and then. She also brought two happy cheese faces in their party hats to lunch today.

I found out during Math Night earlier in the week that the Assistant Principal at Cam’s school comes in to the cafeteria every day to see what she has for lunch. How cute is that? I hope she gets a kick out of today’s lunch.

Camers also has mandarin wedges, grapes, all natural peach and mango gummy hearts, and two star-shaped cookies from The Fresh Market.

Have a fantastic weekend!

Every now and then my husband will ask me to pack his lunch for work.

So I thought, why not include one of his lunches here on the blog?

So here is last night’s lunch, packed in an Easy Lunchbox:

  • Israeli couscous with sun-dried tomatoes, feta, parsley, sweet peppers, and grilled chicken
  • A little lemon to squeeze over his couscous

Cam’s school had a math based scavenger hunt at a local grocery store last night. She adores math and actually does math workbooks for fun so we thought this would be right up her alley. We were right!

Each kid was given a list of tasks based on their grade level and when their sheet was filled out completely, they turned it in to the Assistant Principal in exchange for a goodie bag and some popcorn.

She had such a good time last night so I thought I would make her a fun lunch today to remind her of her super fun scavenger hunt.

In this lunch:

  • Grape tomatoes
  • Carrots
  • Strawberries
  • Clementine – from goodie bag
  • Scooby Snacks – from goodie bag
  • Cheese shapes
  • Pumpkin seeds – in the star box
  • Organic fruit leather

There were also some meal time conversation cards in her little bag of treats so I thought it would be fun to include one today.

A Valentine Bento

14 Feb

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Today’s lunch is sweet. Like, literally sweet.

There’s a lot more sugar happenin’ in that bynto up there than I normally send for lunch but I think that today calls for a little extra sweetness. 😉

In the top tier there are carrots and cheese hearts in the silicone heart next to a chocolate snack cake.

I made two heart-shaped chocolate hazelnut spread sandwiches and topped them with organic fruit leather and Valentine’s gummies.

I started feeling really guilty late last night about not making any special treats for my kids so I popped some popcorn, added a few chocolate candies and pretzels, covered them in melted white chocolate and hot pink sparkly sprinkles, and then drizzled dark chocolate over the top. That concoction is in the bottom tier.

I hope your Valentine’s Day is sweet ♥

It’s a Valentine’s bento!

I know Valentine’s Day is tomorrow but I couldn’t resist making a sweet little lunch filled with love a day early.

And what says love better than hearts?

Nothin’, I’m pretty sure.

In today’s lunch, there are two chicken sandwiches, colby jack cheese, a Valentiney snack cake, apples, organic fruit leather, carrots (under the apples), and two gummy candies. And almost everything is heart-shaped. Sweet!

I was doing a little shoppin’ yesterday and I happened to come across a set of butterfly and flower shaped silicone cups in yellow (Cam’s favorite color) for $4.99! There was no way they weren’t coming home with me.

Since I had new butterfly shaped silicone cups, it seemed appropriate to do a butterfly bento.

The top section contains cheesy butterflies and strawberries with fruit leather butterflies on top.

I used my butterfly pastry stamp to make two sandwiches and put them in the middle section along with some fruit filled wheat cereal.

The bottom section contains Annie’s Organic Cheddar Snack mix.

I’m just going to go ahead and point it out (as if you haven’t noticed by now anyway).

I took the picture with the scrapbook paper upside down.

Insider secret: All those super cute backgrounds you see in most bento pics – most likely scrapbook paper.

That’s right. I just blew the lid off this whole operation!

Okay so not really, but it did deflect from my lack of attention to detail for a second.

Whoopsie.

Anywho… the contents of this lunch include:

  • 8 salami and cheese stars on saltines
  • Strawberries with organic fruit leather flower cut-outs placed on top and speared with a leafy pick
  • A brownie heart with a few chocolate covered sunflower seeds
  • Some Disney pretzels I found in the Valentine’s section of Super Target

The pretzels are shaped like cars and tiaras. Although I don’t think you can actually see any tiaras in that picture up there.

What you see above is actually a bento made by a 5 year old.

I let Cam choose which foods she wanted in her bento, got out some cutters for her, and then just let her go to town.

Except for the cutting of the celery, she did everything herself.

It was so cute watching her arrange the cereal so it laid just the way she wanted it to.

The type A, slightly ocd apple did not fall too far from the tree.

For lunch today, she chose celery, carrots, fruit filled wheat cereal, strawberries, and cheese bunnies.

It’s World Nutella Day!

Yes, that’s an actual holiday. And any holiday centered around food is a holiday that I can get on board with.

It’s also National Frozen Yogurt Day so if Nutella isn’t your thing you can always celebrate frozen yogurt.

Or you could celebrate both and have some Nutella flavored frozen yogurt.

If that’s not already a thing, it should be!

In the interest of full disclosure, I have to tell you that in our house, we prefer Jif Hazelnut spread. We think it tastes better and you get more for your money. And that’s not even a paid endorsement. Although if Jif wanted to send me some free product to review on this blog I’d be more than happy to accept it.

So I guess we’re not really celebrating Nutella Day here but we love our chocolate hazelnut spread none the less so I put it on a sandwich anyway.

Aside from the chocolate hazelnut spread kitty sandwich, I packed Cheez-its, strawberries, carrots, cheese stars, and the rest of the sunflower seeds that were leftover from lunch yesterday in the star box.
