Did you know that a baby fish is called a fry?

I sure didn’t. Not until this weekend when I had an aquarium full of them.

Let me back up a sec so this makes sense.

Camryn got an aquarium for Christmas. The weekend after Christmas, her Daddy took her to the pet store where she picked out two fish. Those fish have been happy and thriving in their new home on our counter top.

Over the last few days we noticed that one of the fish was getting really… plump. And she was eating like crazy.

My Husband made a joke about her possibly being pregnant (at that point we didn’t even know it was a her – we just always referred to that fish as a girl).

Long story short, we go to my parents’ house for lunch and there are two fish in the tank.

We come home later that evening and there are nine.

Seven teeny tiny little fish.

We’re calling them the fry kids – remember them?

A fishy themed lunch seemed appropriate today.

Here it is.

I made two fish shaped sandwiches which represent her two full-grown fish. She also has mozzarella bubbles, and a cup full of fry kids (cupcake flavored Goldfish crackers). The grapes and tomatoes kind of look like the gravel in her aquarium and strawberries are her favorite so I put them in as well. I included a “great job” pick because she’s done such a good job of taking care of her new pets.

All nine of them.

It’s a bunny bento!

For lunch today, Camers has a butterfly shaped turkey sandwich (okay so it’s not all bunnies ;)) with bunny cookies on top, bunny shaped mozzarella cheese, grapes and orange tomatoes.

Happy Friday!

Mr. Wiggles is no longer with us. He was taken in the night by the Tooth Fairy. No need to worry though, she left a note and a dollar so all is well.

The expulsion of Mr. Wiggles was pretty uneventful too. We were eating dinner last night and all of the sudden, Camryn stopped chewing, looked right in my face and with a mouthful of chicken said “Mom, I have something to tell you.” That was it, no tears, no freaking out. I cleaned up the tooth, rinsed her mouth out, and she went right back to eating. That kid is a maniac.

For her lunch today, I used the butterfly Lunch Punch from the “Critters” set to make her a pretty chicken sandwich. I used a butterfly fondant cutter to make smaller butterflies out of swiss cheese. Next to that I made flowers out of celery, carrots and tomatoes. I just used a knife to split the celery almost to the bottom, to cut notches out of the carrots, and to slice ends off of grape tomatoes. Easy peasy.

I packed strawberries and clementines in the larger section and pretzel sticks in the smaller section.

It’s 12/12/12. Had I been a little more with it and planned ahead accordingly, I probably could have come up with a themed bento today instead of a hodge podge bento. Oh well.

I made a quick pasta salad last night that consisted of veggie pasta, broccoli, peas, olives, tomatoes, chicken and mozzarella cheese. I threw the frozen broccoli and peas in with the pasta during the last minute of boiling time. Then I drained the pasta and veggies and mixed in everything else. I drizzled just a tiny bit of Italian dressing over the top and gave it one more good mix.

I slapped it into Cam’s bento along with some clementine wedges and a homemade carrot and pineapple muffin.

Lots of fruits and veggies going on today.

Happy Friday!

In today’s bento I packed two sandwiches filled with Jif Hazelnut spread, a cheese stick, grapes, tomatoes, tortilla chips, and a small juice box that fits perfectly in Camryn’s new bento box.

I hope everyone has a great weekend.

Daily Bento & A Quick Product Review

29 Nov

I ordered one of these bento boxes from Pottery Barn Kids last Friday:

They are $16.50 (except for the lavender box which is only $11.99) and all come with free shipping. Guess which one I ordered…

Yep.

I obviously haven’t had this box long enough to do a thorough review yet so here are some quick pros and cons:

Pros:

  • Compartments – I like compartments. No need for baran or silicone cups.
  • Lots of room – Measurements are 7″ wide x 8″ long x 2.5″ high so while it is roomy, it should still fit in most lunchboxes.
  • Seems durable  – Time will tell.
  • Dishwasher safe on the top rack which is nice.

Cons:

  • All the compartments (except the largest one) are the same size. Some people will love this. I however, would have preferred if they had extended the largest compartment a little to fit a standard sized juice box or an uncut sandwich and left two smaller compartments for smaller items like nuts or dried fruit.
  • May be too large for smaller kids. My kindergartener eats about 5 bites at lunch so this box is a little large for her now but I have no doubt that she’ll get good use out of it when she’s a little older.
  • That little door on the top left compartment does not stay closed when the lid is open.
  • Not leak proof.

So even though there are a couple of things I’d like to change if I could, overall I do like it so far.

In today’s bento, I packed chicken and cheese roll ups, grapes, carrots, green beans, tortilla chips, graham crackers, and a fruit and oatmeal bar. Whew! That’s a lot of food.

I also want to mention that PBK included a $10 gift card in my package which I thought was super awesome of them. I’m not sure if that’s a special thing that they’re doing for the holidays and I can’t guarantee you’ll get one too if you order but you just might.

For today’s lunch I made a piggy chicken sandwich and put it in one side of Cam’s bento box. In the other, I loaded it up with fruit and veg. I sliced an apple horizontally and used flower-shaped cookie cutters to make them pretty. You can’t see it in the picture but I used a very teeny flower-shaped cutter to remove the core. I also used a leaf-shaped cutter for the cheese. In the same section, I put celery sticks, pea pods, and grapes.

I hope everyone has a happy and safe Thanksgiving.

Isn’t it weird when things just sort of come together on their own? Without meaning to, I created a frog/insect theme for today’s bento.

I cut some carrots into butterfly shapes last night using a small fondant cutter. I also grabbed the first CuteZCute insert that my hand touched this morning when I made Cam’s sandwich and it just happened to be a frog. The first pick I grabbed was also a frog. And lastly, when I tossed in some Cheez-Its, I noticed once they were in the bento that they were Spiderman Cheez-Its. See all the spiders?

There is some sliced celery under the carrot butterflies and the froggy sandwich is filled with sliced chicken.

I wonder if my little miss caught the theme at lunch time today.

Happy Monday! I hope everyone had a fantastic weekend. I’m proud to say that Cam is in the no cavity club for another 6 months at least so that made my weekend happy.

For her Monday bento, I shredded up some leftover turkey and just put it in a little silicone up. There are a few Angry Birds graham crackers next to it. In the opposite section I packed celery sticks, carrot sticks, and a few grapes. I also quickly cut some colby jack cheese into star shapes & tossed them in as well.

Behold the bento that almost wasn’t. Pictured above, is actually the 2nd bento I made last night. As I was putting the first one in the fridge, it slipped out of my hand and all of my super nimble cat like reflexes weren’t enough to keep it from hitting the floor. Luckily, nothing actually spilled out of the bento box, it just got sloshed around and jumbled up inside the box.

So we press on because this is real life and sometimes we drop things and therefore sometimes we end up making lunch twice.

For today’s bento, I put some diced chicken breast leftover from dinner the previous night, in a silicone cup with some sliced carrots. Next to that are some french green beans (hericot vert) with some yellow grape tomatoes on top. In the other part of the bento, I put two banana muffins and a few chocolate covered almonds.
